The 2026 Osun State gubernatorial election is shaping up to be a fierce contest, with 14 prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) members declaring their intent to challenge incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The APC aspirants, announced ahead of the party’s December primary, include Otunba Christopher Iyiola Omisore, Hon. Bola Oyebamiji, Omooba Dotun Babayemi, Professor Rafiu Durodoye, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, Hon. Benedict Adegboyega Alabi, Senators Babajide Omoworare and Mudashiru Hussain, Hon. Kunle Rasheed Adegoke, Mr. Babatunde Oralusi, and Dr. Peter Babalola.
The candidates hail from across Osun’s senatorial districts: Oyebanji, Alabi, Ogunbiyi, Hussain, Babayemi, and Babalola represent Osun West; Omisore, Oralusi, and Omoworare are from Osun East; and Adegoke and Durodoye come from Osun Central.
Each aspirant is optimistic about securing the APC ticket and defeating Adeleke in the general election.
APC state chairman Sooko Tajudeen expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, urging candidates to mobilize grassroots support and foster unity.
Professor Durodoye was the first to declare his candidacy on June 3, 2025, followed by Omisore on October 8, 2025. Omisore boldly predicted securing 90% of the primary votes, while Babayemi highlighted his extensive campaign, having covered 200 of Osun’s 322 wards to build grassroots momentum.
Bola Oyebanji, former state finance commissioner and current managing director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, emphasized his economic expertise, vowing to boost Osun’s economy if elected.
“I’m confident in winning the ticket and delivering for Osun,” Oyebanji stated.
The PDP, however, dismissed the APC aspirants as “minor politicians.” PDP chairman Hon. Sunday Bisi defended Adeleke’s record, asserting, “Governor Adeleke’s transformative impact on Osun residents will ensure his re-election.”
