EPL: Aston Villa stun Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles at home continued on Sunday as they suffered a 2–1 defeat to Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, extending a worrying pattern of inconsistency in front of their supporters.

The hosts made a bright start, with Rodrigo Bentancur firing them ahead early in the first half. However, Morgan Rogers struck a superb equaliser for Villa before the break, restoring parity and shifting momentum. Substitute Emiliano Buendía then sealed the win for Unai Emery’s men with a late finish that silenced the home crowd.

The defeat further highlights Tottenham’s difficulties on home soil under head coach Thomas Frank, who has now recorded just three wins and 11 defeats in 18 Premier League matches since replacing Ange Postecoglou in the off-season.

Although several of those setbacks came before Frank’s arrival, his tenure has been marred by inconsistent home results. The tension among fans was evident, coming on the heels of a 2–0 loss to Bournemouth and a frustrating 1–1 draw against Wolves.

The result ends Tottenham’s seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions and drops them to sixth place in the Premier League table, marking Frank’s second defeat in eight league outings.

In contrast, Aston Villa continued their resurgence under Unai Emery, extending their unbeaten streak to eight matches across all competitions, including five straight victories — three in the league and two in Europe. Sunday’s triumph also marked Villa’s first away win over a top-four rival, having earned just one point from six such fixtures last season.

Tottenham were without several key players — James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma, Destiny Udogie, and Dominic Solanke — while captain Cristian Romero was forced to withdraw during the warm-up, compounding Frank’s selection problems.

Villa’s win moves them into 10th place as they continue their push to rejoin the race for Champions League qualification.
