NYCN urges youths to shun planned protest, cites court order, U.S. Embassy security alert

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on Nigerian youths to refrain from participating in the planned nationwide protest following a restraining order reportedly obtained by the federal government through the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement signed by Buhari Shehu, chairman of the NYCN Interim Management Committee, the council confirmed that a Federal High Court in Abuja had issued an order barring organisers and participants from going ahead with the protest.

Shehu noted that the development followed security concerns and warnings from the United States Embassy in Abuja, which had advised American citizens in Nigeria to steer clear of protest locations due to potential risks.

“We cite this as a precautionary measure to emphasise the potential risks associated with the planned protest,” the statement read.

The NYCN expressed concern that the demonstrations could spiral into violence and cause a breakdown of law and order, endangering lives and property across the country.

“We urge all Nigerian youths to exercise restraint and stay out of trouble. The planned protest may lead to a breakdown of law and order, which could put lives and property at risk,” Shehu warned.

While acknowledging the right of citizens to express their grievances, the council appealed to young people to adopt peaceful and lawful channels for civic engagement.

“We implore all Nigerian youths to prioritise peace, stability, and national security. We urge you to explore alternative and lawful means of expressing your grievances and demands,” it added.

Reaffirming its commitment to youth development and national unity, the NYCN pledged continued collaboration with government agencies and stakeholders to address pressing challenges affecting young Nigerians.

“We have no other country to call our own. We must come together to safeguard our dear nation,” the statement noted.
