Erling Haaland’s hunger for goals showed up again on Saturday as he struck twice in the second half to hand Manchester City a 2-0 win over Everton at the Etihad Stadium.
The win temporarily pushed Pep Guardiola’s side to the top of the Premier League table pending the outcome of Arsenal’s clash with Fulham later today.
Erling Haaland had already bagged a hat-trick for Norway during the international break, and his latest double brought his tally to 23 goals in just 13 matches across club and country this season.
For much of the first half, Everton kept City quiet and even looked the sharper of the two teams. Iliman Ndiaye was a constant menace, intercepting a poor pass from Nathan Ake but failing to connect with Beto, who arrived just too late at the back post. The Senegal forward then saw a thunderous strike tipped over by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City began to click after the break. Haaland, who had been on the fringes until then, rose to meet Nico O’Reilly’s cross and powered a header beyond Jordan Pickford. Only five minutes later, he added a second, sweeping home a low ball from Savinho that took a touch off James Tarkowski and left Pickford with no chance.
Everton’s Jake O’Brien had earlier survived a scare when his attempted clearance came off his own crossbar.
In another Premier League fixture, Sunderland continued their fine start to the season with a confident 2-0 win over Wolves at the Stadium of Light.
France international Nordi Mukiele opened the scoring after a slick one-two with Trai Hume, slotting past Sam Johnstone to put the Black Cats ahead.
Wolves tried to respond after the break but lacked the precision to break down Sunderland’s organised backline. Their frustration deepened in stoppage time when Ladislav Krejci turned the ball into his own net.
The result lifted Sunderland to seventh place, marking their best home start to a top-flight campaign since 1968-1969, while Wolves remain rooted to the bottom without a win in eight matches.
Full-time results:
Man City 2-0 Everton
Sunderland 2-0 Wolves
Burnley 2-0 Leeds
