Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has welcomed Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s public show of faith in his long-term project but insists football offers no guarantees about the future.
Ratcliffe, who now oversees football operations at Old Trafford, recently told The Times that it could take Amorim three years to make a meaningful impact at the club.
The comments came at a tense moment, with United struggling for form and questions being raised over the Portuguese coach’s future.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to Anfield for United’s 100th meeting with Liverpool, Ruben Amorim said he appreciates Ratcliffe’s backing but warned that the sport rarely follows a set timeline.
“It is really good to hear it but he tells me all the time, sometimes with a message after games, but you know, I know and Jim knows, that football is not like that,” Amorim said. “The most important thing is the next game. Even with owners, you cannot control the next day in football.”
United’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, also admitted it has taken longer than expected for Amorim to settle into English football since arriving from Sporting last November.
The 40-year-old has won just 10 of his 34 Premier League matches in charge and has yet to guide United to back-to-back league victories this season. They have not finished a match week higher than ninth place.
Despite growing unease among supporters, Amorim said there is no sense of panic inside Carrington. Still, he admitted that he prefers not to rely on public reassurance because it could make players feel too comfortable.
“It’s really good to hear it because it helps our fans to understand the leadership knows it is going to take a while,” he said. “But at the same moment, I don’t like it because it gives a feeling that we have time to work things out. I don’t want that feeling in our club.
“The pressure I put on the team or on myself is so much bigger than that from outside. In football, especially in big clubs, you need to prove yourself every weekend.”
