The National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Umar Farouk Ibrahim, has said President Bola Tinubu stands a strong chance of winning re-election in 2027, adding that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, will not contest in the next general election.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on Thursday, Ibrahim argued that Nigeria’s opposition parties have become too weakened to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said Tinubu appears to be in a “comfortable position” as the next election draws nearer.
Tinubu faces weak opposition
“Tinubu may take his way, of course yes,” Ibrahim stated, suggesting that none of the opposition figures currently in the field poses a real threat to the president.
He went on to liken the political atmosphere to a football match, saying: “When you look at those people contesting with Tinubu, in any match you see the opponents; are these really opponents? Except the referee wants to be giving them penalties. Even with the penalties, some will score and others will miss.”
Ibrahim dismissed claims that the APC is responsible for the internal crises facing opposition parties, including the Labour Party.
“I say it here that for us in the Labour Party, we do not have any reason for anyone to accuse APC of interfering in our internal crisis,” he maintained.
‘Obi not interested in 2027 race’
The LP secretary also claimed that Peter Obi has withdrawn from active involvement in the party and has no plans to contest the 2027 presidential election.
“I can tell you, Obi is not going to contest presidential election. Obi is enjoying media publicity but 2027, he is not interested in it. We have offered him the presidential ticket, but he rejected it,” Ibrahim said.
He further questioned Obi’s political direction, hinting at confusion surrounding his current party affiliation. “Look at what is happening. Why is he in ADC? Why does he belong in PDP? In which political party does he belong, and where will he get the ticket?” he asked.
