Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development, which was confirmed by Arise TV on Wednesday, marks a major political shift in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Diri made the announcement in Yenagoa, the state capital, in the presence of key members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and other lawmakers who also defected with him.

In total, 23 members of the Assembly are reported to have joined the APC alongside the governor.
“I am here to resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party. And I’m not going to resign alone, as you can see, I’m here with Mr Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and all the members of our party who are going to go with me.”
He added that some lawmakers could not be present at the event due to other engagements.
“There are some who are not here because they’re on official assignments,” he stated.
He continued, expressing gratitude to his supporters and promising continued commitment to the development of Bayelsa State.
“Today I have formally resigned my membership of the People’s Democratic Party for very obvious reasons.
“I’m grateful to all my friends and supporters who have stood by us and with us.
“Together we will continue to build a strong and virile Bayelsa State and a strong and virile country by extension.”
