I Never Saw Governor Mbah’s Defection Coming

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has expressed surprise over the defection of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

George made the statement on Tuesday, during an interview on ‘Politics Today,’ a programme on Channels Television.

He admitted that he did not anticipate Mbah’s decision despite several interventions by party elders to keep him within the PDP fold.

“I never saw it at any time. In fact, when Anyanwu was brought back as secretary to complete his assignment, he asked his people not to attend meetings,” George said, highlighting the unexpected nature of the defection.

Governor Mbah officially announced his departure from the PDP on the same day, joining the ruling APC alongside other party leaders.

While George expressed shock at the development, he wished Mbah well in his new political journey.

“We hope he finds success in his new party, but the PDP remains strong and resilient despite recent defections,” George stated, emphasising that the party’s foundation is not built on individuals but on its collective members and structures.

George’s remarks come amid growing concerns over defections in the Southeast region, following the departure of other key PDP figures, including Udeh-Okoye.

Despite these high-profile exits, he insisted that the PDP remains a formidable opposition and is committed to reorganizing and strengthening itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The party has faced challenges before, and we have always emerged stronger.

“This is another test, and we will overcome it together,” he added, reinforcing the party’s resolve to maintain unity and credibility in Nigeria’s political landscape.
