The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a new bill to regulate the operations of scavengers and waste dealers across the state.
The legislation is aimed at promoting public order, environmental safety, and peaceful coexistence among residents.
The bill, titled The Scavengers and Waste Dealers Law, 2025, was passed on Tuesday, following the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Environment by its Chairman, Hon. Samsideen Lawal.

Lawal, while presenting the report, said the legislation was necessary to ensure proper waste management and to curb the rising cases of disorderliness associated with scavenging activities in the state.
According to him, “The bill will help regulate the operations of scavengers, promote public order, and enhance environmental safety in Ogun State.”
After the presentation, Lawal moved for the adoption of the report, which was seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Adeleye.
The motion was supported by all members through a unanimous voice vote during plenary presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide.
The bill was then read and adopted clause by clause before the Committee of the Whole House.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sherrif, subsequently moved the motion for its third reading, seconded again by Hon. Adeleye. The Clerk of the House, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, read the bill for the third time before it was passed.
Speaker Elemide thereafter directed that the clean copy of the bill be transmitted to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his assent.
He commended the lawmakers for their commitment to improving public safety and environmental sustainability through legislative action.
