Government Moves Tough On ASUU, Implements “No Work, No Pay” Policy

The Federal Government, on Monday, directed all vice-chancellors of federal universities to enforce the “no work, no pay” policy on members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The directive applies to lecturers currently participating in the ongoing nationwide strike declared by the union.

In a circular signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Federal Government issued a directive to all federal universities across the country.

The circular instructed university authorities to immediately conduct a roll call and submit detailed reports of academic staff who are present and performing their duties.

The document was also copied to key government agencies, including the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, the Accountant-General, and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Alausa stressed that the government would no longer tolerate defiance to labour laws, noting that the policy aligns with existing legal provisions.

“In line with the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reiterates its position on enforcing the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy for any employee who fails to perform their duties during a strike,” he said.

He directed that salaries be withheld from lecturers who fail to work during the ongoing strike, emphasizing that the “no work, no pay” rule must be strictly applied.

However, Alausa clarified that members of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) are exempted from the directive, as they are not participating in the industrial action.

Alausa urged university heads to act promptly, saying, “Please treat this matter with utmost urgency and a deep sense of responsibility in national interest.”
