The family of the late activist Abiodun Aremu has postponed his burial to October 23, giving the labour movement the opportunity to pay him what they called a proper farewell.

Aremu, who was the Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), lost his life on Sunday, October 12, after being hit by a vehicle near his home in Ota, Ogun State. Witnesses reported that he was crossing the road around 6 p.m. when the accident occurred. He was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead despite attempts to save him. He was 65 years old.

Speaking on behalf of the labour movement, former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) and ex-Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Owei Lakemfa, stated: “The Aremu family has agreed with the Labour Movement that the interment of our leader, Comrade Abiodun ‘Aremson’ Aremu, be moved by about two weeks. This is to allow for proper mobilisation and attendance.”

Lakemfa added that Aremu’s burial will now take place on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, at Number 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, Opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.

In an earlier tribute, Lakemfa hailed Aremu as “one of the greatest revolutionaries and internationalists of our time,” emphasizing his leadership in the working-class struggle and his work to bring together labour and civil society through the Labour–Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) and other platforms.

He further noted Aremu’s involvement in founding the Amilcar Cabral Ideological School (ACIS-M), the Nigeria Movement for the Liberation of Western Sahara, and the Nigerian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba.

Lakemfa concluded that Aremu’s impact “will endure through the movements and institutions he helped to build,” and added that the best way to honour him would be to “continue in his footsteps and build a world founded on social justice.”
