The Founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Boniface Aniebonam, has expressed support for the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He commended President Bola Tinubu for making the appointment, describing it as a step in the right direction to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
In a statement made in Lagos on Sunday, Aniebonam said the appointment was a step in the right direction and urged Nigerians to give Amupitan a chance to prove his competence.

“INEC’s image has been so eroded over the years that he must begin by righting the wrongs and re-creating confidence in the system.”
He noted that Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council must have seen Amupitan’s competence before nominating him, describing the move as a sign of the President’s resolve to fix Nigeria’s electoral challenges.
“The President is truly committed to righting the wrongs in the country, and he seems to be starting from INEC,” he said.
Aniebonam also advised the incoming INEC boss to immediately address lingering issues within the commission, especially those related to disobedience to court judgments.
“Unattended matters, particularly those bordering on the rule of law, should be cleared once he assumes office. Nigerians want a transparent and credible electoral system,” he added.
He further urged the Senate to confirm Amupitan without delay, stressing that his appointment offers a chance to rebuild public confidence in the nation’s electoral process.
