A prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) figure in Abia State, Prince Paul Ikonne, has expressed optimism that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will soon be freed without opposition politicians exploiting his case for political gain.
Ikonne made the statement during a courtesy visit by Ukwa la Ngwa youths on Friday.
Addressing the gathering, Ikonne criticized certain political leaders for using Kanu’s detention to score “cheap political points” instead of prioritizing governance and accountability.
He also questioned the Abia State Government’s claims of executing a ₦54 billion “Smart School” and a ₦6 billion “Recreational Centre” under Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
“If these projects are real, why weren’t they showcased during the governor’s recent road rehabilitation events? Why do government reports only appear as social media posts with no visible evidence?” Ikonne asked.
He further alleged discrepancies in the state’s quarterly performance reports, claiming that funds were being allocated to “untraceable projects” despite Abia receiving over ₦30 billion monthly from federal allocations and internal revenue.
Ikonne described the Otti administration as one focused on “repainting and rebranding old structures” while presenting them as new achievements.
Urging Abia youths to demand transparency, Ikonne emphasized that “propaganda cannot substitute genuine performance.”
He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing financial support to states and implementing policies to stabilize the economy, but lamented that Abia’s government has failed to translate this support into meaningful development.
Ikonne called on Abians to remain vigilant and hold their leaders accountable, stressing that the state’s progress depends on rejecting “cosmetic projects” and empty promises.
