Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), has announced that the extensive rehabilitation of Apapa and Tin Can Island seaports will now commence in the first quarter of 2026, a delay from the previously planned start in the last quarter of 2025.
Speaking at the World Ports Conference of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) in Kobe, Japan, Dantsoho, who serves as IAPH Vice President for Africa, said the project is expected to be completed within 48 months.
Dantsoho emphasized that comprehensive engineering, environmental, and design studies have been conducted to ensure the project’s success.
He highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to upgrading port infrastructure to enhance the maritime sector’s global competitiveness and attract international investors.
“The economy is poised for significant investment, and President Bola Tinubu’s reform initiatives have been well-received by investors,” Dantsoho noted.
He added, “A project of this scale requires meticulous preparation, including engineering and environmental studies. Just as building a small house takes years, reconstructing a port is a complex process. We are targeting a 48-month timeline and aim to begin construction in Q1 2026.”
