A fatal road accident claimed the lives of ten passengers and left eleven others injured on Friday night, October 10, along the Apamaru section of the Obajana-Lokoja highway.
The crash involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus, registration number KTG 100YL, carrying 21 male passengers.
According to Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), a preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was triggered by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, causing the driver to lose control during the night journey.
“Of the 21 passengers, ten died on the spot, while eleven sustained injuries such as deep cuts, fractures, and bruises,” Ogungbemide stated.
The injured were promptly evacuated to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana, while the deceased were handed over to their families and taken to Sarikin Hausawa, Obajana, for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The FRSC Corps Marshal expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, noting that night travel, speeding, and improper overtaking remain leading causes of deadly crashes in Nigeria.
He urged commercial vehicle operators to comply with road safety regulations and announced plans to intensify enforcement against overloading and promote campaigns discouraging night journeys on critical routes.
“Passengers must stay vigilant and report reckless driving to prevent such tragedies,” Ogungbemide added.
