At a retreat in Enugu, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, emphasized the urgent need for a Nigerian Constitution that serves all segments of society.
Speaking to committee members, Kalu outlined key priorities for constitutional reform, including empowering local governments, ensuring swift electoral justice, strengthening fiscal federalism, promoting women’s full participation in governance, and enhancing accountability across all levels.
Kalu highlighted the formation of a distinguished panel of constitutional lawyers, scholars, and policy analysts to guide the committee’s work.
“The decisions we make here will shape Nigeria’s democracy for generations,” he said, urging the committee to focus on reforms that empower local communities, break barriers for women in public life, and restore trust in the electoral system.
He stressed three guiding principles: unity of purpose, legislative discipline, and prioritizing national interest over partisan or regional agendas.
“We must speak with one voice,” Kalu said, advocating for bipartisan, achievable reforms with widespread public support.
“Our goal is a Constitution that reflects the aspirations of over 200 million Nigerians and strengthens our federal democracy.”
Enugu Governor Peter Mbah, represented by Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, echoed Kalu’s call for reform, emphasizing the need for judicial, police, and other changes to ensure speedy justice delivery.
Mbah noted that the proposed amendments could address Nigeria’s socio-political, security, and economic challenges, fostering inclusive governance across all sectors of society.
Kalu concluded by urging the committee to leave Enugu with a clear roadmap for constitutional reform, ready to build consensus in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.
“Let us shape a Constitution that fulfills our promise to build a united, equitable Nigeria,” he said.
