“Why We Planned To Go On Strike” – ASUU Speaks To University Students

The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has explained the rationale behind its proposed industrial action during a meeting with student leaders.

The session was convened by the union’s Students Relations Committee.

It aimed to inform students about the persistent challenges facing the university system and the union’s ongoing demands from the Federal Government.

On Friday, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, Chairperson of the Jos chapter, thanked student leaders for the opportunity to engage with them and highlighted the purpose of the meeting.

“Let me remind the general public that ASUU is worried that it may no longer be able to guarantee the industrial harmony that has been enjoyed over the last two years.

“No doubt, the federal government is proud of ASUU for sustaining such tempo.

“But that has been achieved at the detriment of the welfare and wellbeing of our ever-resilient members who have suffered persistent denial of their due entitlements,” Molwus said.

He further noted that the union had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, which will elapse on October 13.

“If government fails to satisfactorily address our demands, without further notice, we will proceed on a two-week warning strike,” he added.

“Molwus emphasszed that the decision followed the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on September 28, 2025, in Abuja, and that the union’s demands are aimed at strengthening the quality of university education, not personal gains.

Miss Jane Pwajok, President of the Student Union Government (SUG) at the university, praised ASUU for the engagement, describing it as an eye-opener.

She added that it provided students with a clearer understanding of the lingering issues between the union and the government.

Pwajok also called on ASUU to explore alternative means to press home its demands aside from industrial action.
