Nigeria secure vital 2-1 win over Lesotho

Nigeria claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Lesotho in a crucial Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, on Friday evening.

The Super Eagles, playing away due to Lesotho’s lack of suitable facilities, moved within striking distance of the group leaders Benin Republic with the three points.

Nigeria dominated possession in the encounter, but struggled to convert chances against their hosts.

Lesotho, buoyed by their earlier 3-0 awarded win over South Africa due to an eligibility issue, threatened on counters.

Breakthrough in the second half

The deadlock broke in the 55th minute when Lesotho wing-back Thabang Malane handled Moses Simon’s shot inside the box, earning a penalty.

Captain William Troost-Ekong stepped up and slotted it home, sending the Nigerian bench into celebration and easing the mounting pressure on coach Eric Chelle’s squad.

Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 80th minute through debutant Akor Adams, courtesy of an assist from Victor Osimhen.

Lesotho responded valiantly, pulling one back in the 83rd minute through substitute Hlompho Kalake.

The Crocodiles pressed late, nearly equalizing in stoppage time when Fusi Matlabe’s effort skimmed wide following a mix-up between Nwabali and Wilfred Ndidi.

However, Nigeria held firm to secure the win.

Qualification hopes still alive

The result lifts Nigeria to 14 points from nine matches, three points adrift leaders Benin Republic, and one point below second placed South Africa.

With one game remaining against Benin on October 13, Nigeria still have everything to fight for.
