Mixed reactions have trailed the invasion of Amotekun offices in Osun State by the police over the killings of some residents of Akinlalu, a community in Ife North Local Government of the state.

After the alleged killings of the residents of the community, the IGP-IRT Team was led by SP Rotimi Ogunmuyiwa and accompanied by Deputy Commissioner of CID, Bayonle Suliaman, stormed Amotekun Headquarters at Powerline area, Osogbo, where they requested to inspect the cells of Amotekun based on petition that the outfit kept detainees that have spent over a month in their cells.

The Amotekun Commander was not on seat but they met with the Chairman of Amotekun Board and effort to meet heads of units within Amotekun like Anti-cultism, narcotics, kidnapping, homicides and other units created by the leadership of Amotekun were not successful.

The team proceeded to inspect the cells where four suspects were detained in two different cells. Two of the suspects said they have been detained for over five weeks for selling India hemps. One was detained for four days for stealing engine oil while a Fulani herdsman said he has been in the cell for six days for cattle rearing.

The DC directed that the suspect should be handed over to nearest police divisional headquarters adding that it is unlawful to detain those suspects for more than 24hours.

Meanwhile, Osun State House of Assembly condemned the sealing of Amotekun offices, noting that the operative was validly established by a law enacted with the clear mandate of complementing the efforts of conventional security agencies in combating kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes across the state.

The speaker, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, in a statement on Friday, said the assembly finds it deeply troubling and constitutionally offensive that an agency created by law and funded by the Osun State Government could be summarily shut down without due process, consultation with the State Government or the House of Assembly which enacted its enabling legislation.

“The House is equally disturbed by credible reports linking this action to political interference allegedly instigated by Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi in collaboration with former Governor Gboyega Oyetola. If proven true, such actions constitute a reckless abuse of political influence and a gross betrayal of the people of Osun State, whose safety and security must never be reduced to a political manoeuvre,” Egbedun said.

Responding to the allegation, the Senator representing Osun East, Francis Fadahunsi, said the Amotekun office has become the home of murderers and they are no longer protecting the community.
“The Amotekun officers are disturbing the peace of the state. The Amotekun are supposed to protect the territorial integrity of the state and not to start terrorizing. Even in my own town, Amotekun arrested someone in a land case. Can they do that in Ede?

“I am the Senator of Ife/Ijesa senatorial district, and this is not about the APC or PDP. From February to date, I’ve lost 12 people to Amotekun’s killing.
“I don’t know if Governor Oyetola is involved. He is the leader of the APC, but as for me, I was the one who invited the police, as I can’t continue to let them kill my people.

Similarly, Governor Ademola Adeleke has commended the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun on the steps taken so far on the recent killings in Akinlalu, even as he advocates observance of the rule of law in the investigation process.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Friday, Adeleke who assured the police of full cooperation further urged full support for the investigation process he had earlier ordered to unravel the details behind the killings.

While again commiserating with victims, the Governor affirmed his commitment to fishing out those responsible ,declaring “no one or group, no matter how highly placed or connected found to be culpable in one way or the other should be spared from facing the full brunt of the law.
