Argentine football manager Miguel Angel Russo, a revered figure in South American football, has died at the age of 69, Boca Juniors confirmed on Wednesday.

The club expressed “profound sadness” over Russo’s passing, describing him as a man who “leaves an indelible mark on our club and will always be an example of joy, warmth, and dedication.”

Russo, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, had stepped back from his day-to-day coaching duties in recent weeks due to declining health. He last attended a game on September 21, when Boca drew 2–2 with Central Córdoba in the Argentine Primera División.

Boca and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani paid tribute on Instagram, writing:

“Thank you Miguel for showing us all such an important value that is called ‘courage.’”

In Russo’s absence, assistant coach Claudio Ubeda had taken charge, although Russo reportedly maintained close communication with his coaching staff and the club’s management until his death.

Russo enjoyed a highly successful coaching career, including three separate spells at Boca Juniors. He guided the club to Copa Libertadores glory in 2007 and the Argentine Superliga title in 2019–20, before leading them to the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this year.

Beyond Argentina, he managed several clubs across South America and the Middle East, including Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia.

A respected midfielder during his playing days, Russo made over 400 appearances for Estudiantes de La Plata and earned 17 caps for Argentina.

In June 2025, he returned for a third stint as Boca manager, four years after his previous tenure was cut short just six games into a new season.

Boca Juniors and fans across the football world continue to mourn the loss of a man celebrated for his resilience, tactical brilliance, and deep love for the game.
