Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of lying about never pursuing a third term in office.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu claimed that Obasanjo personally informed him of his plan to extend his presidency during his tenure.
Obasanjo had denied any attempt to seek a third term during the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation’s Democracy Dialogue in Accra in September, saying, “If I wanted a third term, I know how to go about it.”
Kalu, however, alleged that he was invited to the Presidential Villa to discuss a constitutional amendment allowing Obasanjo to run again. He also claimed that Senator Uche Chukwumerije brought ₦50 million to be shared among supporters, which Kalu refused.
The senator said his fallout with Obasanjo began after he opposed the third-term agenda and informed global leaders, including Thabo Mbeki, George Bush, and Nelson Mandela, about the move.
Kalu added that while Obasanjo convinced some governors, he and a few others remained opposed, citing his oath to serve only eight years.
