The federal government has commenced urgent repairs on a damaged section of the Shagamu–Benin carriageway following structural deterioration on one span of the bridge located at the border between Ondo and Edo states.
In a statement made available to Blueprint, the Federal Ministry of Works confirmed that the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi has ordered the immediate deployment of a team of engineers to assess and begin emergency repairs on the affected deck of the Benin-bound carriageway.
The ministry said the damage to the bridge, which was constructed in 1981 is attributed to age-related deterioration a common challenge for infrastructure of its kind emphasizing that the bridge, a double-carriageway structure, reportedly suffered visible punctures in one of its five spans, prompting swift federal intervention.
“In line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, urgent action has been initiated,” the Ministry noted, adding that the damaged section will be rehabilitated within a maximum of 45 days after the completion of concrete works, to allow for proper curing and strength development.
Umahi assured that vehicular movement will be maintained on one carriageway during the repair period, with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) assisting in managing traffic to prevent gridlock.
“This is not the first time such damage is occurring on this bridge.
“A similar incident on another span was previously repaired promptly. We are working to ensure a lasting solution through complete replacement of the aging deck slabs on both sets of bridges within the affected location,” the statement reads.
