A former two-time senator who represented Edo South senatorial district, Ehigie Uzamere has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, adding more crisis to the major opposition group.
It was gathered that Mr. Uzamere addressed his resignation letter dated October 7, 2025 to Mr. Osaigbovo Godspower, chairman of ward 12, in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state.
He was elected on the platform of the PDP, in his first tenure in 2007 and re-elected through Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in 2011.
The former senator said that his decision to resign from PDP was driven by conviction and continued commitment to the service of his people and not by animosity.
Uzamere added that he finds it necessary to seek a new platform that aligns more closely with his vision and desire to continue serving his people effectively.
The letter reads: “Politics, at its best, is a vehicle for service and representation. A means through which leaders express their commitment to the welfare of the people.
“However, as the dynamics of the Nigerian political landscape continue to evolve, I find it necessary to seek a new platform that aligns more closely with my vision and desire to continue serving my people effectively.
“In doing so, I remain guided by my philosophy of Aiguiyekampe politics without bitterness. My decision is driven by conviction, not animosity, and by a continued commitment to the service of our people,
“I therefore wish to formally tender my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) while expressing my sincere appreciation for the opportunities and experiences the Party afforded me in the past.”
Defection crisis in PDP
Many political giants such as governors and lawmakers have been defecting to other parties, most especially the ruling All Progressive Congress, over what they described as ‘lack of vision for the party.
The crisis erupted in 2023 before the general election, when Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike and Atiku battled for presidential ticket.
Wike who came second, insisted that the party must present a candidate from South region to balance power rotation.
However, Atiku, who has been contesting for many years also believed that only a strong northern candidate can end APC’s leadership.
Following this disagreement, Wike and some governors created the 5G, a group of five governors, including Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Wike (Rivers) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), who later endorsed President Bola Tinubu from South West region.
