Lagos Floods Displaced Over 3,000 Residents, Affect 6,000 – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, revealed that flooding incidents across the state have displaced over 3,000 residents.

He added that more than 6,000 other residents have been affected by flooding between January and October this year.

The disclosure was made during the World Habitat Day 2025 commemoration in Ikeja, Lagos, where Sanwo-Olu called for stronger partnerships to implement flood-resilient solutions to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the governor spoke on the year’s theme, “Urban Crisis Response: Flooding in Focus.”

He emphasised the unique challenges Lagos faces as a coastal megacity and the urgency of taking decisive action.

“As an aquatic state, flooding remains one of the biggest environmental threats confronting Lagos.

“It has the capacity to cause widespread damage to lives and property,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

He disclosed that over 57,000 residents have been impacted by flooding in 2025, with numerous homes destroyed and more than 3,000 people displaced.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the state government’s proactive measures, including sustainable land use planning, construction of resilient infrastructure, expansion of affordable housing, promotion of green spaces, and climate change adaptation initiatives.

The Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO) coordinates these efforts under the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S.+ Agenda.

“Emergency response alone is not enough,” the governor added.

He stressed that building a truly resilient Lagos requires early warning systems, efficient drainage networks, and strong collaboration with federal agencies, humanitarian organizations, and local communities.

He also urged private investors, development partners, and innovators to support the flood resilience agenda through initiatives such as mangrove restoration, flood-resilient housing, smart drainage systems, renewable energy, and urban risk insurance.

Sanwo-Olu cited existing partnerships with organizations like the Dangote Group as examples of productive collaborations that can help mitigate future flood risks.
