Chelsea urged to trigger £57m clause for Harry Kane

Chelsea urged to trigger £57m clause for Harry Kane

Former Liverpool and Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has urged Enzo Maresca to make a bold move for Harry Kane, insisting the Bayern Munich striker is exactly what Chelsea are “crying out for.”

Kane, who joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, has a £57 million release clause that becomes active at the end of the 2025–26 season.

Although the England captain remains “extremely happy” in Munich, he has admitted he wouldn’t rule out a future return to the Premier League.

Johnson: Chelsea need a proven finisher

Johnson believes Chelsea should be first in line if Kane decides to return to England, citing the club’s need for a prolific goalscorer to anchor Maresca’s new system.

“If Harry Kane is ready to come back to the Premier League, it’s Chelsea who should make the move for him,” Johnson told 10bet.

“They’re crying out for that kind of player. Arsenal play too much tiki-taka, Liverpool have Isak, and City have Haaland, so Chelsea makes the most sense.”

Spurs réunion ‘makes no sense’

While Tottenham have a first-option clause in Kane’s transfer agreement, Johnson dismissed the idea of a reunion, warning that returning to Spurs would be a “step backward.”

“He left for a reason, to win trophies. Going back to Spurs would make no sense. That story is finished,” he said.

Kane focused on Bayern, but door still open

Kane, under contract with Bayern until 2027, has maintained focus on his current club but acknowledged the unpredictability of football decisions.

“I wouldn’t say I’d never go back [to the Premier League],” Kane said while on international duty. “But right now, I’m fully all in with Bayern.”

The 31-year-old striker is currently back in England with the Three Lions, preparing for Thursday’s friendly against Wales at Wembley, before Thomas Tuchel’s side face Latvia in their next World Cup qualifier on October 14.
