As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage remain unclear.

However, officials of the recently rehabilitated Rivers State Fire Service were at the scene, battling to bring the flames under control.

Preliminary information gathered revealed that the fire started on the fourth floor of the Podium Block, which houses key ministries, including the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Environment, among others.

The Podium Block is one of five high-rise buildings that make up the Rivers State Secretariat Complex.

The complex was constructed during the military administration of Alfred Diete-Spiff, the first Military Governor of Rivers State.
