A British Airways flight from London to Abuja was rerouted to Barcelona’s El Prat Airport early Monday after a retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal from Anambra State passed away onboard.
The flight, which left Heathrow Airport at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, was due to arrive at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by 5:00 a.m.Around 1:30 a.m., the pilot declared a medical emergency, prompting the diversion.
The deceased, an elderly man in his early 80s, was reportedly ill and returning to Nigeria for treatment when he died during the flight.
He was among the few surviving retired air vice marshals from Anambra State.The incident caused significant distress among passengers, leading to a second medical emergency involving a pregnant woman, though her condition remains unconfirmed.
British Airways issued an apology for the disruption, assuring passengers of support via email and the airline’s Live Chat feature.
A replacement aircraft was arranged to continue the journey, departing Barcelona at 2:50 p.m. local time and expected to arrive in Abuja at 5:45 p.m. Nigerian time.
The airline expressed gratitude for passengers’ patience and understanding.
