The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has reaffirmed its commitment to producing a people-driven constitution that truly meets the needs and aspirations of Nigerians.

Spokesperson of the Committee, Hon. Philip Agbese, stated this on Monday while briefing journalists in Abuja.

He noted that the committee has made remarkable progress under the leadership of its chairman and Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

Agbese described Kalu’s leadership as visionary and inclusive, stressing that his brilliance and managerial competence have been central to the success recorded so far.

“Our goal is to give Nigerians a constitution that truly works for them — one that deepens democracy, promotes equity, and strengthens national unity.

“Hon. Benjamin Kalu’s foresight and commitment have inspired a new level of seriousness in the entire amendment process,”he said.

He noted that from the outset, Kalu provided a clear roadmap, built consensus across party lines, and ensured active participation by all committee members, making the review process more transparent and inclusive than ever before.

Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, added that members of the committee have demonstrated uncommon patriotism and diligence in carrying out their assignment.

“Our members understand the magnitude of the responsibility we carry on behalf of Nigerians.

“The level of collaboration among lawmakers, experts, civil society organisations, and citizens has been unprecedented.”

According to him, the committee has received hundreds of memoranda from stakeholders, including state governments, professional bodies, traditional institutions, and advocacy groups, addressing critical national issues such as devolution of powers, gender inclusion, state police, electoral reforms, and special seats for women in parliament.

Agbese explained that the constitution review process was deliberately designed to be participatory, with state, zonal, and national public hearings as well as technical sessions held to ensure transparency and broad-based input.

“Deputy Speaker Kalu has ensured that the process is not Abuja-centered,” Agbese stated.

He said, “Nigerians from every part of the country have had the opportunity to make their voices heard, which is why public confidence in the exercise has significantly increased.”

He assured that the committee is on course to deliver its final report within schedule, saying the next phase will focus on harmonising inputs from across the country before presentation to the House for voting.

Agbese commended Speaker Abbas Tajudeen for his institutional support and lauded the synergy between both chambers of the National Assembly as a major factor behind the success so far.

“With the leadership and dedication we’ve seen, Nigerians can be confident that this constitution review will not go the way of previous attempts. We are determined to deliver a constitution that will stand the test of time,” he concluded.

It would be recalled that the House Committee on Constitution Review, on September 22, held a national public hearing in Abuja as part of its ongoing engagements with stakeholders and citizens nationwide.
