The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the number of teams participating in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from 12 to 16.

The new format will take effect from the 2026 edition of the tournament. The decision was announced after CAF’s Executive Committee meeting held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Next year’s competition, scheduled to hold in Morocco, was originally planned for 12 nations. However, with the expansion now approved, CAF may add another qualifying round to allow more countries to compete for the four extra slots.

The WAFCON, which started as an eight-team tournament in 1998, has continued to grow over the years. The 2022 edition in Morocco featured 12 teams and recorded higher attendance and broadcast figures.

CAF has also increased investment in women’s football. The prize money for the last tournament rose by 45 percent to $3.45 million, with champions Nigeria receiving $1 million after winning their 10th title.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the decision shows the organisation’s commitment to developing women’s football in Africa.

“I am pleased with the progress we’ve made in women’s football. Our goal is to ensure both men and women can make a career from football,” Motsepe said.

With 16 teams now confirmed for 2026, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is expected to become more competitive and provide greater opportunities for female players across the continent.
