Why the nature of Felix Agu’s injury could 70% rule him out of Super Eagles’ crucial qualifiers

Werder Bremen’s right-back Felix Agu has become a major injury concern for Nigeria after picking up an ankle injury in their 1–0 Bundesliga win over St. Pauli, Soccernet.ng reports.

This setback could see him miss the Super Eagles’ crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures against Lesotho and Benin Republic happening in a few days.

Agu, who was included in Nigeria’s latest squad for the qualifiers, had to be substituted before half-time after landing awkwardly during a defensive challenge.

He didn’t require an ambulance but was later spotted leaving the stadium on crutches with a heavily bandaged ankle, which sparked fears of a possible ligament or muscle strain.

Steffen on Felix Agu’s Injury

Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen admitted the situation was worrying, though he hopes the international break will give the lover of “Okocha” some recovery time.

“Of course, that’s not really good news,” Steffen said with a hint of concern as quoted by Diechstube. “I hope the time until the next game will help us. But it can’t be completely ruled out that it’s worse. In that respect, it might not be a bad thing that we have a two-week break now.”

Chances The Bremen Star Will Miss Super Eagles vs Benin & Lesotho Clash

The extent of the injury is yet to be officially confirmed, but early reports from German media suggest that Agu’s condition could sideline him for at least a few weeks. This means that there’s roughly a 70% chance he will not be available for Nigeria’s upcoming qualifiers.

The timing of the injury is particularly frustrating for both Agu and Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles, as the full-back has been gradually working his way back into form after previous injury setbacks.

His absence would leave Nigeria short of depth in the defensive flanks. Following this, Chelle will now be expected to look towards other options for the crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures.
