The Nigeria Police Force has intercepted more than 100 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in separate anti-smuggling operations targeting cross-border economic crimes.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, explaining that the arrests and seizures were carried out by operatives of the Border Patrol Unit during routine stop-and-search exercises.
According to Hundeyin, one suspect, identified as Yasir Adamu, was arrested along the Illela–Sokoto Highway while transporting 80 jerrycans of petrol allegedly intended for smuggling into the Niger Republic.

“After preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the suspect was attempting to smuggle the petroleum product across the border into the Niger Republic,” Hundeyin stated.
According to the Guardian, in a separate operation in Katsina State, police operatives intercepted another consignment of 35 jerrycans of petrol, each containing 25 litres, which was abandoned by suspected smugglers who fled upon sighting the patrol team.
Hundeyin noted that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, adding that the latest interceptions highlight the Force’s renewed commitment to strengthening border security and dismantling illegal fuel supply networks.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, assuring that the Force would intensify efforts to combat all forms of economic sabotage.
“The officers have demonstrated commendable vigilance and professionalism. The Nigeria Police Force will sustain robust operations against all forms of economic crimes,” Egbetokun said.
