NAFDAC Seals Chinese Supermarkets, Cosmetics Shops Selling Unregistered, Harmful Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two Chinese-owned supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops in Abuja for allegedly selling unregistered and potentially harmful products.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the agency revealed that the enforcement operations were carried out in Jabi District and Wuse Market following consumer complaints and subsequent surveillance exercises.

During the inspection, officials discovered food products labelled solely in Chinese and cosmetic items that lacked proper registration, contravening NAFDAC’s regulations governing the sale, distribution, and labelling of regulated goods.

According to the agency, the affected supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street in Jabi, were sealed for violating the labelling policy, which mandates that all products sold in Nigeria must include English translations to ensure transparency and consumer safety.

NAFDAC stated that the crackdown aligns with its ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and to curb the circulation of substandard and potentially dangerous products in the Nigerian market.

The statement read:

“NAFDAC has sealed two Chinese supermarkets in Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market, Abuja, for violating regulations on the sale, distribution, and labelling of regulated products.

The supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, were shut down following consumer complaints and surveillance, which confirmed the sale of unregistered food items labelled only in Chinese, in breach of NAFDAC’s labelling policy that requires English translations for the Nigerian market.”

The agency emphasized that it will continue to intensify its surveillance and enforcement actions nationwide to protect consumers from exposure to unsafe products.
