Why Nigerian judiciary must adopt digital technology – Fagbemi – Daily Trust


Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olosunkanmi Fagbemi, has given reasons why Nigeria’s judiciary should adopt digital technology in the adjudication of justice in the country.

According to the Minister, adoption of the technology will not only fasten but ensure fair and effective service delivery in the judicial system in the country, citing its potential to enhance transparency, efficiency, and justice for all citizens.

Fagbemi said this on Friday while delivering a lecture with the title “The Nigerian Justice System in a Digital Age: Opportunities, Challenges and Road Ahead”, at the 2025 University of Jos Distinguished Alumni Lecture, held at Unijos.

Fabegmi, who was the guest lecturer at the event, said the digital age presents the Nigerian justice system with unprecedented opportunities to transform the way it delivers, stressing that these opportunities, if harnessed fully, could redefine not only court operations but also the relationship between citizens and the legal process.

He said, “At the heart of this transformation is the the potential to expand access to, enhance efficiency, leverage data for informed decision-making and empower all the stakeholders in the justice ecosystem.”

Speaking during the event, governor Caleb Mutfwang, who was the special guest speaker, commended Chief Fagbemi for delivering the lecture on the degital technology, describing it as a “fountain of knowledge.”

He noted that the lecture, presented with a blend of practical experience and deep reflection, offered valuable insights into how technology is shaping justice delivery in Nigeria, appealing to the Attorney General to support the advancement of competent and patriotic alumni of the University of Jos into leadership positions at the national level.

Speaking earlier, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, chairman of the occasion, said the topic of the lecture was well considered as the world has become not only global, but highly digital with huge consequences.

According to Lalong, the digital age has impacted and is changing virtually all professions, including law, which has overtime been considered a conservative and traditional profession.

“Thanks to information technology, the internet and latest developments in Artificial Intelligence, the bench and bar are now transformed in ways never seen before. From virtual court hearings to judges relying on digital devices to take notes, the old ways of dispensing justice are giving way to the new. Even lawyers today have more opportunities for research and presentation in courts because of the advantages of digitization.” Senator Lalong said.
