China’s former agriculture minister, Tang Renjian, has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve after being found guilty of corruption and bribery.
Naija News reports that the ruling was delivered by the People’s Court of Changchun in Jilin Province on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
The court said Tang, who previously served as governor of Gansu, accepted property and cash bribes valued at more than $38 million between 2007 and 2024.
According to the judgment, Tang’s actions caused major harm to the state and the people.
He admitted to the crime, returned part of the illegal proceeds, and expressed remorse.
These steps led the court to suspend his execution for two years, in line with provisions of China’s criminal law on capital punishment.
Under the suspended sentence arrangement, the 63-year-old politician could have his punishment commuted to life imprisonment or a fixed jail term depending on his conduct during the reprieve period.
Tang’s conviction adds to a growing list of high-ranking officials punished under President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign, which continues to target public officials accused of graft across the country.
