“The loss of this vibrant journalist to an armed robbery incident is a stark reminder of the dangers Nigerians face daily in their homes and on the streets,” the statement read. “By Somtochukwu’s untimely death, journalism has lost not just a good professional but also one who represented the future of journalism in the country.”

The Guild further linked her killing to the deteriorating security situation across the nation, citing the growing incidents of armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, insurgency, and other violent crimes that have instilled fear and uncertainty among citizens and professionals.

According to Vanguard, the editors’ body urged the Federal Government and security operatives to urgently address the root causes of insecurity and ensure the protection of lives and property. It stressed that the perpetrators behind Maduagwu’s murder must be tracked down and brought to justice without delay.

“At this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with Arise News and the broader journalism community,” the Guild stated, adding that the late reporter’s dedication and courage should inspire a renewed commitment to excellence in journalism despite prevailing challenges.

The NGE also prayed for the repose of Maduagwu’s soul, describing her as a talented journalist whose life and career were cut short in her prime.
