Tinubu Condemns Murder of ARISE News Anchor Somtochukwu, Urges Swift Justice



President Bola Tinubu has strongly denounced the horrific murder of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old prominent anchor, reporter, and producer at ARISE News Channel, who was fatally stabbed during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of September 29.

In a statement issued from the Presidential Villa, President Tinubu described the incident as a “cruel and condemnable” act that has robbed Nigeria of a “promising professional journalist.” 

He extended his deepest condolences to Maduagwu’s family, her colleagues at ARISE News, and the broader Nigerian media community, emphasizing that her vibrant contributions to journalism and her role as a trained lawyer will be deeply missed.”

Ms Maduagwu was a promising professional journalist whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner,” the President stated. “Security and law enforcement agencies should conduct a quick and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice without delay.”

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the launch of a full-scale investigation, with officers combing the crime scene and pursuing leads on the suspects. 

Preliminary reports indicate that Maduagwu, affectionately known as “Sommie” to viewers, was attacked by unidentified armed robbers who invaded her home, leading to a violent confrontation that ended in her tragic death.

Maduagwu, born on December 26, 1995, had risen quickly in the media landscape, becoming a familiar and trusted face on ARISE News through her eloquent reporting and dedication to ethical journalism.
