FG Declares October 1 Public Holiday To Mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary


 

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government.

In the statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended congratulations to all Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, on this historic milestone.

He emphasised the importance of upholding the patriotic spirit, unity, and resilience that have sustained the country since its independence in 1960.

The Minister also urged citizens to remain committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which focuses on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity.

“We call on all Nigerians to continue to embrace unity and work together to ensure that the nation grows stronger in peace, progress, and development,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said on Monday, September 29, 2025.

He further stated,“Independence Day is not just a celebration, but a reminder of the sacrifices made by our founding fathers.

“It is a day to reflect on our collective responsibilities towards building a stronger Nigeria.”

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also urged citizens to actively participate in the nation-building process, noting, “Every Nigerian, whether at home or abroad, has a role to play in the nation’s progress.

“Let us use this occasion to renew our commitment to unity, peace, and sustainable development.”

He expressed confidence that with the cooperation of all Nigerians, the country will continue to experience growth and development.

He also wished citizens a happy and memorable Independence Day celebration, encouraging them to reflect on the nation’s journey and achievements over the past 65 years.
