The Ogun State Government has criticized Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East, for what it described as “reckless and misleading” comments targeting Governor Dapo Abiodun regarding the ongoing 260-meter rehabilitation of Paddy Arikawe Oye-Igbimo Road in Sagamu.
In a strongly worded statement, the government accused the former governor of distorting facts and inciting public discord to gain cheap popularity, urging him to respect due process instead of stirring controversy.
The statement, issued by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Abiodun, clarified that contrary to Daniel’s claims of obstruction, the state government only directed the contractor handling the road project to regularize operations after commencing work without notifying relevant authorities.
“Only a mind bent on mischief will describe adherence to due process as obstruction,” Akinmade said, noting that the contractor has since complied with the state’s recommendations, rendering Daniel’s allegations baseless.
Akinmade questioned why Daniel, unlike other federal lawmakers in Ogun State, consistently faces disputes over constituency projects, suggesting his approach lacks collaboration and transparency.
“It is ironic that Senator Daniel, who spent years undermining state institutions while in power, now pretends to seek collaboration,” he stated, accusing the senator of using pliant media outlets to promote confusion and division.
The government further highlighted Daniel’s history of disregarding due process, citing his refusal to present property documents during a routine verification exercise in Sagamu.
Akinmade also referenced Daniel’s suspension by his party’s state executive, framing his attacks on the Abiodun administration as a pattern of antagonism.
“Daniel complains about roads, yet how many did he construct as governor? Meanwhile, this administration has built over 1,000 kilometers of roads across Ogun State,” he added.
The statement emphasized that Governor Abiodun’s administration remains committed to the rule of law and public safety, refusing to compromise standards to appease an individual.
“While Daniel may continue his media war, the Ogun State Government will not endanger the public or bend to his whims,” Akinmade concluded.
The controversy has heightened tensions between the state government and the senator, raising questions about the management of constituency projects and the balance between federal and state oversight.
