NUJ Marks World News Day, Vows To Defend Press Freedom

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and protecting media workers as the world commemorates World News Day.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Achike Chude, and titled “World News Day in Focus”, the union stressed the importance of journalism in holding power accountable and shaping public understanding of global events.

“As the world celebrates World News Day, we are reminded once more of the absolute importance of news carriage across communities, organisations, nations and the global space,” the NUJ stated.

The union described journalism as a vital tool for exposing corruption, defending human rights and driving social change, while acknowledging the dangers faced by reporters in the course of their work. It added: “The universal recognition of the role of journalists even in spite of inherent risks and dangers is based on the acknowledgement that the survival and progress of human society is dependent on shining light in the darkest corners.”

On the challenges facing Nigerian journalists, the NUJ noted threats, harassment, poor remuneration, and inadequate tools for practice, calling these “factors inimical to the sound practice of the profession.”

The body urged practitioners to “keep the faith” and maintain high ethical standards despite these setbacks. “This is a day to declare to journalists all over the world that theirs is a special and pivotal responsibility that has helped to make the world a better place across centuries and generations,” the statement read.

It also reiterated its opposition to laws that restrict press freedom, including what it described as the “obnoxious cyber crime act” and other “unwholesome anti-media laws and attitudes.”

Quoting the Nigerian Constitution, the NUJ reminded authorities that “the press, radio, television, and other agencies of the mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this Chapter and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people.”

While celebrating World News Day, the union encouraged journalists to remain committed to objectivity and ethical practice, reaffirming its pledge to “promote and protect the interests of journalists in Nigeria and beyond.”
