Brentford stun Man United as pressure mounts on Ruben Amorim

Manchester United’s troubles deepened on Saturday as Brentford sealed a 3-1 victory to pile further pressure on Ruben Amorim.

Igor Thiago struck twice inside the opening 20 minutes after calamitous United defending gifted the Bees control of the game.

Benjamin Sesko briefly raised United hopes with his first goal since a £74m summer move from RB Leipzig, but Bruno Fernandes squandered a golden chance to level, missing a second-half penalty saved by Caoimhin Kelleher after a lengthy VAR review.

Mathias Jensen’s stoppage-time strike sealed the points for Brentford and condemned Amorim to his third defeat in six Premier League matches this season.

Man United, stuck in 13th place with just two wins, remain without back-to-back league victories under Amorim, who has collected only 34 points from 33 top-flight games since replacing Erik ten Hag last November.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards was scathing in his Match of the Day analysis, branding United’s defensive display “shambolic” and blaming Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system for leaving players confused and exposed.

The result comes after a humiliating League Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby and a bruising 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City earlier this month.

Though co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had recently backed Amorim, his position now looks increasingly fragile, with next weekend’s clash against promoted Sunderland at Old Trafford looming as a must-win before a daunting trip to champions Liverpool.

“It is always the same to lose at this club, it hurts a lot,” Amorim admitted post-match, as the pressure on his reign intensified.
