Suspected sea pirates attacked a commercial passenger boat carrying 30 people from Calabar, Cross River State, to Oron, Akwa Ibom State, kidnapping 17 passengers in a daring assault.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, September 25, 2025, near Bouy 34 along the waterways, targeting a fibre boat operated by Sea Express Jetty.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the pirates seized 17 passengers and took them to an undisclosed location, while 13 others were rescued from the vessel.
“Patrol gunboats have been deployed in collaboration with other security agencies to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators,” a source revealed.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities promising updates as the situation unfolds.
Journalist Agba Jalingo corroborated the incident, noting that the Akwa Ibom State Police Command spokesperson, Timfon John, and former Cross River governorship candidate, Eyo Ekpo, have also acknowledged the attack.
Security forces are intensifying efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted passengers and to bring the culprits to justice.
