FRSC Marshal Advocates Arming Officers For Safer Highway Enforcement

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has suggested that arming operatives may be the only viable way to effectively enforce traffic regulations on Nigerian highways.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Thursday, Mohammed highlighted the enormous risks faced by FRSC officers, particularly when dealing with heavy-duty vehicles.

He noted that a small patrol team is often overpowered when attempting to stop overloaded trailers and tankers carrying both passengers and goods.

“How do you stop a trailer or a tanker on the road? It is very difficult. A truck, especially one with up to 100 passengers on top with animals, and you only have four personnel on patrol, how do you stop that?” the FRSC boss asked.

Mohammed emphasized that effective enforcement requires what he described as the “power of cohesion,” stressing that without proper authority, the agency’s work becomes almost impossible.
