Enugu Police Arraign Two Suspects for M^rder of UNN Student at Bonfire Night

The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned two principal suspects, Ezema Onyedikachi, 27, and Ugwu Chigozie Anthony, 21, for the alleged stabbing and murder of Nweze Chiebonam, a 29-year-old student, during a bonfire night event at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The suspects were brought before a court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder and have been remanded in correctional custody pending further legal proceedings.

The incident occurred in the early hours of September 13, 2025, following a bonfire night organized by the Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, at UNN on September 12.

The event, attended by students and invited guests, including the suspects and the deceased, took a tragic turn after a minor car collision.

Police reports indicate that at approximately 3 a.m., as attendees were leaving the venue, Ugwu Anthony’s car struck Nweze Chiebonam’s vehicle, sparking a confrontation.

Though the initial altercation was resolved, investigations revealed that the suspects later conspired, armed themselves with a dagger, and returned to the scene with intent to attack.

According to the police, Ezema Onyedikachi took the dagger from Ugwu Anthony during the assault and fatally stabbed Nweze in the chest.

The victim was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.

The dagger used in the crime has been recovered as evidence.Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, expressed condolences to Nweze’s family, describing the incident as “unfortunate and avoidable.”

In a statement, he urged residents, particularly youths, to shun violence, practice self-restraint, and resolve conflicts peacefully.

“Such a loss of life over a minor dispute is heartbreaking,” Giwa said, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and de-escalation in disputes.

The arraignment has sent shockwaves through the UNN community, with students and faculty mourning the loss of Nweze, described as a vibrant member of the university.

As the legal process unfolds, authorities are calling for calm and cooperation from the public to prevent further tragedies.
