Wike launches new wave of water projects in FCT

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commenced a fresh phase of water infrastructure developments following a 16-day commissioning period that concluded on July 3, 2025. On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, he inaugurated the fully rehabilitated Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant at Lower Usuma Dam in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the momentum continues with the flag-off of the construction and expansion of water supply to FCT satellite towns scheduled to begin tomorrow, starting with Lot 1: Bwari Township in Bwari Area Council. Further expansion efforts will be launched on Thursday with Lot 2: Karu town and its surrounding areas in Abuja Municipal Area Council.

This initiative follows a new agreement signed during President Tinubu’s 2023 visit to China, aimed at extending water supply infrastructure to satellite communities including Bwari, Kubwa, and Karu.

Minister Wike had earlier disclosed during the June 16, 2025 commissioning of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project that procurement for these extensions was nearing completion, with promises of timely delivery.
