Aston Villa held to 1-1 draw by 10-man Sunderland

Aston Villa’s wait for a first Premier League win of the season continues after they were held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The newly promoted Black Cats played nearly an hour a man down after Reinildo was shown a straight red card in the 33rd minute for violent conduct following a clash with Matty Cash.

Despite the setback, Sunderland defended resolutely and created chances of their own, with Omar Alderete’s second-half header rattling the crossbar.

Villa finally broke their goalscoring duck when Cash struck from 25 yards, his swerving effort beating goalkeeper Robin Roefs to give the visitors the lead. But Sunderland hit back as Wilson Isidor converted from close range after a headed assist from captain Granit Xhaka.

The result leaves Sunderland unbeaten in three league matches with eight points from five games.

Villa, meanwhile, remain winless, with just three points from five matches, and still rooted in the relegation zone.
