Property Developer Drags ‘On Air Personality’, Radio Station To Court Alleging Libelous Broadcast – Independent Newspaper Nigeria


LAGOS – Mr. Elijah Adeogun, the Chairman/CEO of Eli-Ade Properties Nigeria Limited, has written the court to summon Yemi Kazeem, the presenter of a programme called ‘Eto Abo’ of a Federal Radio Station located in Ikoyi and other defendants to court for allegedly broadcasting a libelous content against him during a programme presented on Friday August 1, between 9.30-10.00 p.m. on the station.

In a Suit filled at the Ogun State High Court on behalf of Mr. Elijah Adeogun by Barrister Taiwo Ogunleye, his legal counsel, the lawyer asked the Court to summon and order Mr. Kazeem to appear before it within 30 days and failure to appear, the Court should give judgement on the matter in his absence.

He also asked the Court to order the Defendants to publish a retraction of the entire libelous publication and be made to pay the sum of N50,000,000 (Fifty Million Naira) as damages resulting from the alleged false and malicious broadcast made on ‘Eto Abo’. The counsel also demanded the Defendants be made to publish an apology by way of advertorial in a conspicuous page in THE Punch and Nigerian Tribune newspapers.

He also said the court should order the defendants to publish a retraction of the entire alleged libelous publication and an apology by way of broadcast from the first and second Defendants’ on the same radio broadcast – Eto Aabo” in at least two consecutive editions thereof.

Furthermore, the suit is asking for an Order of perpetual injunction restraining the Defendants by themselves, their agents, servants and privies, whatsoever called, from further writing, publishing and/or disseminating any scandalous publication or material calculated at or that tends to defame the Claimant in any manner whatsoever, while adding that the sum of NI0,000, 000 (Ten Million Naira) as damages should be charged against the Defendant for the trespass to the Claimant’s property without any lawful justification.

Mr. Elijah through his counsel accused the defendants that on the day of the broadcast, he made false and malicious statements concerning him, claiming he was a notorious land grabber and disturbing the peace of llasa community, Ota, Ogun State and lying that he is desperately selling landed properties with burial tombs.

When contacted by our correspondent for his reactions to the allegations, Mr. Yemi Kazeem, the Programme presenter, brushed the matter aside.
As at the time of going to press, Mr. Kazeem did not respond to the allegations.
