Lagos fire incident: More losses as d£ath toll rises

The death toll from the fire that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad street, Lagos, Tuesday, has risen to at least 10 as financial services company, United Capital Plc, confirmed the loss of six of its employees.

In a statement, United Capital expressed “profound grief” over the passing of its colleagues, describing them as an “integral part of our company and family.”

The company stated that the loss leaves an “immeasurable void” and announced that preparations for a memorial service are underway.

The latest confirmation from United Capital adds to the four casualties previously reported by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

FIRS had announced that four of its staff members includes Mrs. Ekelikhostse George, Mr. David Sunday-Jatto, Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe, and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye died from smoke inhalation after being trapped on the sixth and seventh floors.

The fire, which is believed to have originated in the building’s basement inverter room, quickly spread smoke throughout the multi-story structure.

Occupants, including staff from United Capital, FIRS, and a branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), were seen attempting to escape through windows as thick smoke filled the upper floors.

UBA has also acknowledged the loss of some of its staff members in the incident, though it has not yet provided specific numbers.

All three companies have extended their condolences to the families of the victims and pledged to offer support during this difficult time.
