Isak makes Liverpool squad for Atletico Madrid Champions League clash

Alexander Isak has been included in Liverpool’s squad to face Atletico Madrid in Wednesday’s Champions League tie at Anfield, putting him in line to make his long-awaited debut for the club.

Manager Arne Slot confirmed the £170 million British record signing will be available after sitting out Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Burnley.

The Swedish international joined from Newcastle on deadline day but has yet to feature for his new side.

“There is definitely a chance, because he is in the squad,” Slot said.

“Normally, I would say 99.9% sure, but I can say it’s 100% sure he will not play 90 minutes. But he is part of the squad.”

Isak endured a disrupted pre-season due to the drawn-out nature of his move to Anfield and has played only once this campaign — a late substitute appearance for Sweden in their World Cup qualifier against Kosovo last week.

The 26-year-old striker was one of Europe’s most coveted forwards last season after scoring 32 goals for club and country and leading Newcastle to the League Cup title.

At Liverpool, he is expected to spearhead a refreshed attacking line alongside big-money summer arrivals Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.

Slot also revealed that Curtis Jones is unlikely to feature after missing the Burnley match through injury.

Liverpool go into the clash in strong form, sitting top of the Premier League with four wins from four, as they look to begin their Champions League campaign on the front foot.
