Stats show worsening Man United struggles as Amorim insists on tactics

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is facing growing criticism after Sunday’s 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City left his side with just four points from their opening four Premier League games.

Phil Foden’s first-half header and a brace from Erling Haaland sealed victory for City on an emotional afternoon at the Etihad Stadium, which also paid tribute to late boxing great Ricky Hatton.

The result leaves United 14th in the table with a goal difference of -3, already eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

It marks United’s worst start to a league campaign since 1992–93, though that season ultimately ended with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side lifting the inaugural Premier League title.

Stats place Amorim at bottom of league rankings

According to Opta, United have collected just 31 points from 31 games under Amorim, fewer than any of the Premier League’s 17 ever-present clubs during that span.

Only Tottenham have matched their points tally, but United sit lower due to an inferior goal difference.

By comparison, Liverpool (68), Arsenal (64), Chelsea (58), and Manchester City (54) lead the table over the same 31-match period.

West Ham, Wolves and Fulham also rank ahead of United, revealing the scale of the challenge at Old Trafford.

Tactics remain unchanged despite poor run

Amorim has won only eight league matches since replacing Erik ten Hag last November and has persisted with his preferred 3-4-3 formation regardless of results.

“It is not a record we should have at Manchester United,” Amorim admitted after the derby defeat.

“I accept that but I am not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy I will change but, if not, you have to change the man,” he added.

Message to frustrated supporters

The Portuguese coach acknowledged fans’ frustrations but insisted he remains committed to the club’s long-term vision.

“My message is I will do everything. I am always thinking about what is best for the club. I really want to win games. I am suffering more than them,” he said.

United return to Premier League action next weekend, hosting Chelsea as they remain under mounting pressure to halt their poor run of form.
