A devastating flash flood has struck several communities in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving hundreds of families displaced and property worth millions of naira destroyed. The disaster followed hours of heavy rainfall that began early Thursday morning.
According to an assessment conducted by the Nigerian Red Cross Society, about 270 households were affected, including 476 children who are now in urgent need of shelter, food, and medical support.
The floodwaters severely damaged no fewer than 115 houses, forcing many residents to abandon their homes and seek refuge in safer locations. Families have been left stranded as water levels submerged buildings and swept away valuable possessions.

Communities hit hardest by the disaster include Gangaren Mobil and Bayan Cinema in Tudun Wada Ward, as well as Magume, Bako Zuntu, and Kamacha in Tukur Tukur Ward. Residents reported losing essential items such as food supplies, electronics, gadgets, and clothing to the raging waters.
A coordinated emergency response team led by Jamil Ahmad Mohammad Jaga of the Nigerian Red Cross Society quickly visited the affected areas to assess the situation. The delegation included officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Director of Emergency and Security Services, and the Deputy Director of Welfare. The team later extended its assessment to Kofar Kuyanbana to evaluate the full scale of the destruction.
Despite the widespread damage to homes and livelihoods, authorities confirmed that no lives were lost in the flooding, attributing the survival of residents to divine mercy.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Zaria Division, has taken the lead in providing immediate relief assistance to affected households, while urging for more humanitarian support to ease the suffering of displaced families.
